Role
The Design Engineer will be an integral part of our Engineering team, contributing to the design and development of biomass-to-biochar conversion technologies, particularly in the realm of pyrolysis technology. This position requires a Mechanical Engineer who is not only adept at learning and applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) but also has a keen understanding of value engineering and cost estimation. Acting as a liaison between the Director of Engineering and the product development team, the Design Engineer will play a pivotal role in ensuring innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions for equipment design and scale-up.
Responsibilities
Depending on skillset, this individual will co-manage various design, cost estimation, value engineering and cross-functional collaborations pertinent to WasteX including, but not limited to:
Technical Support

Collaborate with the Director of Engineering to comprehend project requirements and goals.

Utilize engineering principles to enhance the design and optimize biomass-to-biochar conversion systems.

Apply value engineering methodologies to identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality.
Product Development

Work closely with the product development team to translate design concepts into detailed engineering plans.

Contribute to the creation of 3D models, drawings, and specifications for components and systems.

Incorporate value engineering principles in the design process to achieve optimal performance and cost efficiency.
Cost Estimation

Develop accurate cost estimates for materials, labor, and other resources required for project implementation.

Collaborate with the procurement team to identify cost-effective suppliers and vendors.

Conduct regular cost analyses to track project expenses and identify areas for improvement.
Communication and Coordination

Act as a liaison between the Director of Engineering and the product development team to ensure seamless communication.

Facilitate meetings and discussions to gather input from various stakeholders, emphasizing cost implications.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate cost-effective design solutions.
Documentation

Maintain detailed documentation of design changes, specifications, and cost estimates.

Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations, including cost breakdowns and value engineering analyses.
Continuous Learning and Capacity Building

Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in biomass conversion and value engineering.

Actively seek opportunities for professional development and training, especially in cost estimation methodologies.
Qualifications

Licensed professional engineer (graduated within the last 5 years) preferably with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Strong understanding of engineering principles and design fundamentals.

Willingness to learn and apply CFD and FEA techniques.

Proficiency in 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Willing to pursue advanced learning pathways in Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, or Circular Economy fields.

Willing to travel 50% of the time and be deployed on site (locally or around SE Asia) for a minimum of one (1) week per deployment instance.

Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously; excellent time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; ability to work independently.
