JAKARTA, INDONESIA - At the recent Food Loss and Waste Policy Dialogue hosted by P4G Partnerships and Bappenas (Indonesia’s Ministry of National Development Planning), discussions centered on Indonesia’s targets to cut food waste in half by 2030 and achieve food security by 2045.

WasteX presented biochar as a practical solution: converting agricultural residues into a resource that can simultaneously reduce waste, cut emissions, and boost yields.

Biochar's Potential for Indonesia

WasteX showcased how current, measurable results from its biochar programs in Indonesia provide the foundation for the significant benefits of national-scale adoption:

  • Climate: A potential 30% reduction in agricultural emissions from sources like waste burning and fertilizer use, cutting 19 million tonnes of CO2e annually.

  • Economy: Biochar as a carbon removal and storage method could mitigate 77 million tonnes of CO2e per year, which could generate up to $11.5 billion in income from carbon credit markets for Indonesia.

  • Farmers: Rice farmers could see an annual income boost of approximately $369 (IDR 5.9M) per half-hectare, resulting from higher yields (+20%), reduced fertilizer costs (-25%), and income from carbon credits.

  • Food Security: Consistently improved productivity for high-value crops like tomatoes and corn, directly strengthening the national food supply chain.

Collaborative Path Forward

The dialogue brought together government, international partners, and sustainability advocates—including the Embassy of Denmark in Indonesia, ASEAN, IBCSD, and WRI Indonesia—to align strategies for tackling food loss and waste.

For WasteX, the message is clear: biochar offers a practical, scalable pathway to help Indonesia meet its 2030 and 2045 goals.
